May – you should be inspecting weekly by now – swarming has started early this year. Thoroughly inspect all of the brood. If any of the comb is old then start to work it to the outside so that it can be replaced with foundation placed on the outside of the brood nest. Try and replace a third of it each year. Start by removing outer frames that are full of last years crystalised honey – the bees won't use it anyway. Add supers (they can fill in a week at this time of year) to ensure that there is plenty of space. Congestion is the main cause of swarming. If you plan to expand your apiary then have spare hives at the ready for a real or artificial swarm.

Varroa Resistant Bees
We've all heard rumours of resistant bees, but not really believed it. These bees do exist. It seems they can detect varroa in sealed brood, which they de-cap, eject the baby mites and re-seal. Are your bees resistant ? The things to look for on the varroa screen are: 1) a very low varroa mortality count, 2) lots of fine silver grey dust. At higher magnification this can be seen to be made up of the transparent bodies of tiny infant mites.

The Value of Bees
The value of the bees' services to the UK economy is estimated at £200m a year. The retail value of what they pollinate is valued closer to £1bn.

The oilseed rape is in full bloom and colonies are very busy. Supers are being filled and swarming has started - I received the first phone call from a concerned member of the public on 20th April. …
